Better InvestingCredit Card Fraud Protectionby Grey Finn Identity theft is a serious problem. It seems to have increased with the popularity of the Internet. More and more people are finding it convenient to shop online and in most cases to do this, a credit card is required. If the card number falls into the wrong hands, you could be facing hundreds or even thousands of dollars in unauthorized charges. Credit card fraud protection is something everyone should be concerned about. Short of only purchasing items in person and with cash there is really no way to be 100% safe when it comes to using a credit card. There are ways to ensure that you won’t be liable if someone uses your card without your permission though. Many major banks now offer credit card fraud protection to their customers. This not only includes a limit on how much you’ll have to pay if your card number is stolen, but there are other services available included with credit card fraud protection. One such service has become increasingly common and has proven results when it comes to deterring criminals. This aspect of credit card fraud protection involves the bank calling the card holder if they note any suspicious activity on the account. Often this results in the bank asking about routine charges that the card holder has indeed made. It is important though as it can catch unauthorized activity very quickly, which results in less money being lost. If your bank doesn’t offer this type of service on the card you currently have, there are other things you can do personally to protect yourself. If you do need a credit card to purchase something online, consider getting a pre-paid card solely for that purpose. This is one of the best methods of credit card fraud protection as it becomes impossible for anyone to use the card without permission. Perhaps you need to purchase an airline ticket for five hundred dollars. You would then prepay the five hundred dollars to the credit card company, use the card and discard it. The number becomes invalid and your personal information remains secure. Also, be certain to only deal with sites that use encrypted software. Most large sites do and this adds another layer of credit card fraud protection. If you do visit a site that doesn’t have security features in place don’t offer any of your personal information as it can easily be accessed. You’ve got to always remember that as closely as you guard your sensitive information offline you need to do the very same each and every time you go online.
